In today’s changing world, to survive and grow, and even regain competitive advantage, many companies are struggling with ways to transform their businesses in the face of change.
There are many time tested ways that organisations are trying to ensure the values which it stands for, are accepted. However, in an era of the millennials, perhaps we might want to introspect our ways.
Culture is not a decorative piece but something that we believe in irrespective of the diversity because it cannot be copied but valued.
In my view, there are four key elements that stand out to make a great ‘Organisational culture’:
- Practise what you preach: It is not enough to be a leader by designation; it takes a lot more than the position. I look forward to leaders who not only share great leadership stories, but who also reflect them in their way of doing things. At the end of the day, what we see is what we remember!
- One policy for all: Fairness is an essential element. If we are not able to demonstrate how to treat each and every individual in the team equally, then it is a failure for the organization!
- Respect the diversity: Everyone brings something unique to the team. It could be their experience, passion, knowledge or being the ‘go to person’ in any situation. When we strive to accentuate qualities of each one us, it motivates everybody to focus more on the bigger picture.
- Growth: The truth is, we all want to do better than what we did yesterday, the week or month ago, last year, in fact, every moment. A great organisation will work towards the development of the team members which will encourage a strong sense of purpose and showcase more commitment towards achieving the company’s goals.
Finally, as said by Howard Stevenson “Maintaining an effective culture is so important that it, in fact, trumps even strategy”
